The 3 Social Media Mistakes Every Small Business Makes

By Phil Gee

You're posting regularly. You're trying different things. And nothing seems to work. Sound familiar?

After 18 years of training small business owners on social media, I've seen the same three mistakes come up again and again. The good news? They're all easy to fix once someone points them out.

1. You're talking about yourself, not your customer

"We're delighted to announce..." — nobody cares. Sorry, but it's true. Your customer wants to know what's in it for them. Flip every post. Instead of "We've launched a new service," try "Struggling with [problem]? Here's how we can help."

2. You're posting everywhere instead of posting well somewhere

You don't need to be on every platform. Pick one or two where your customers actually are, and do them properly. Three great posts a week on Instagram will always beat seven rubbish posts across five platforms.

3. You're not telling people what to do next

Every post needs a next step. Visit our website. Book a call. Drop us a message. If you don't tell people what to do, they'll scroll past and forget you existed.
